Make your own naturally coloured lip-balm with cocoa butter and beetroot.
Easy adult and kid friendly lip balm made with beetroot and items from the supermarket.
The blog I wrote a while back titled "Cochineal, E120, carmine... "The little red food colouring bug and allergies" was written after my daughter had a reaction to my lip gloss when I kissed her. Unknowingly it contained cochineal beetle (that she is allergic to), so I decided I would try and make my own so there would be no more buggy kisses from mummy :)
I made this with Scarlett last week so she could have "lip stick" and it lasts for a couple of weeks in a coolish place :)
1 cocoa butter button (I used the matakana superfoods one that I found at Paknsave)
1 teaspoon of oil, either olive oil, avocado oil, coconut or almond oil.
3 drops or so of beetroot juice (grate a small about of beetroot and squeeze out juice).
Melt the wax in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl till melted.
Once melted add your oil, set aside for a couple of minutes to cool slightly then add your beetroot juice.
Place in the fridge to cool for another 5/10 minutes.
Stir again and it should all come together completely.
Pour or spoon into a small lip balm container.
This recipe makes a liquidy lip balm when set so if you want a more firmer consistently you may have to add another button. The great thing about making this is if it comes out too hard for your liking you can just re-melt it and add a bit more oil or if you want it harder you can re-melt and add a bit more cocoa butter. It took me a few goes at re-melting the mix to get it right.
Once you have finished, wipe down the insides of the bowl that you used to melt the buttons with a serviette or tissue to remove any leftover ingredients. Don’t be tempted to pour any leftover mix down the sink under warm water as it can stick to the sides of your plumbing and harden.
